Cascina delle Monache is one of the first farmhouses built and is historically present on the Gavi municipality’s cartographic sheet from the early 1900s.
In the 11th century, several Genoese monastic groups had already established places of assistance like the “EREMITI” and the “BENEDICTA” to help clerics and merchants who travelled the old trade roads, “le vie Marenche.”
These roads, built in Roman times and leading to the sea, connected the western Po Valley to the Ligurian coast, linking the surrounding villages with Genoa. Thus, our farmhouse served as a stop where people could rest and recharge their energies. Cascina delle Monache’s story is young and deeply rooted in the Gavi Wineland.
The Tradition
Rosangela and Carlo, known by friends and family as Gilli and Carlin, were born before World War II and began the story of the family’s dedication to the land.
They were traditional peasants who valued sacrifices over indulgences. Their hard work and determination helped them create a beautiful rural lifestyle. Initially, their business encompassed a variety of farm processes.
They were tenant farmers, cereal growers, gardeners, grape growers, and livestock farmers. Nowadays, we would call them “exceptional multitaskers.” The winery is run by Giovanni, Carlin’s first born, and his family of tireless workers.
The Territory & the Vineyards
And if that wasn’t enough, in 1978, Carlin bought land and established the first family-owned vineyard. The wines are a complete expression of the Gavi Hills terroir; limestone and sandy soils lend remarkable structure and sapidity to our wines.
Cortese is one of Italy’s finest white grape varieties, originally grown in the Gavi area. It is known for its bracing acidity and ability to retain freshness, achieving high levels of quality here.
